A family of materials with an ability to change some of its original properties of the application of any external stimulus such as stress, temperature, field moisture, pH, electrical and magnetic materials are called smart. Some documents included in this class of materials are piezo-electric, magneto-electric braking materials, electronic materials, dynamic, thermo-sensitive materials, polymers, pH sensitive materials halochromic, electro chromic materials, material thermo-chromic and photo chromic materials. Smart materials are materials inert absorbing various functions such as detection, monitoring and adaptive logic to react to changes in their environment, they are exposed in a constructive and often isolated.
To cite some examples illustrative of intelligent materials in the process of changing the properties due to the effect of external stimuli, is considered materials.Piezo electrical, electronic and electrical piezo-electric are materials that generate tension due to the application of stress. The opposite effect of the production of stress when voltage is applied across Piezo material is also valid. Therefore, we have a wide application of piezoelectric materials as sensors in environments different. Used primarily to measure the fluid compositions, the density of fluids, fluid viscosity, or the force of an impact. An example of our lives would be an airbag sensor in automobiles, where the piezoelectric material sense the strength of a shock to the vehicle and sends a release electrical activating airbag inflation.
Another example of a piezoelectric material is electro-magneto-electric brakes and materials electric brake, which undergo a change in viscosity. These are liquids near a solid substance changes to a thick liquid in a split second when exposed to a magnetic or electric field. Chromogen Systems change its color due to the effect of variations in electrical effects, optical or thermal. Electrochromic materials change color or opacity as a result of the application of stress, thermo-chrome materials change color in response to changes temperature, and photos chromic materials change color in response to a change in the light. The application of electro chromic material would in liquid crystal displays and the application of photo chromic materials would be sunglasses that darken the sun.
Smart materials find a wide range of application areas because of their response to different stimuli. Different areas of application may be present in everyday life, aerospace, applications engineering and mechatronics to name a few. The scope smart materials include technical problems with efficiency unattainable and an opportunity to create new products that generate revenue. Sensual devices that can sense their environment and produce information for use in health systems and surveillance use (HUMS) have applications in the aerospace industry to verify the aircraft. An airline requires countless of labor that the behavior of the ramp routine, intermediate and most important checks to verify the health and use fleet. These controls involve numerous time-consuming tasks. Therefore, a plane built from sensual structure of a car has an advantage performance at a level higher than the current data recording, and provide ground personnel with improved health and surveillance use. This would reduce costs associated with snoring and so that aircraft can fly more hours without human intervention.
These sensual structures also find application in the field of civil engineering. They are used to monitor civil engineering structures to evaluate sustainability. Also used in food packaging to maintain control over the safe storage and cooking. However, materials intelligent structures are not limited to the detection, but also adapt to their environment and the materials have an ability to move, vibrate and show several other responses, more sensual aspects. Few applications adapting these materials include the ability to control the aerodynamic an elastic airplane wing to reduce tensions and improve operational efficiency, to control the vibration satellites of lightweight structures, etc.
